About Mike's Garden

A collection of rare and unusual plants growing in an urban garden setting in Houston, Texas. The garden was started in 1980 by Mike Burnett as a personal collection of plants he found interesting.

The small but diverse collection includes palms, bamboo, tropical foliage and flowering plants, bromeliads, and native Texas flora. The garden has evolved over the years by experimenting with interesting, rare, and unusual plants. Plants that proved worthy of a spot in the collection were given permanent status in the garden.

One of the main features of the garden is a small Cypress Pond with several large American Bald Cypress planted in the early 1980's. The specimen trees now dominate the garden canopy. Recent additions several varieties of large tropical clumping bamboo has added yet another dimension of tropical grandeur to the garden.

Useful information about the USDA Zone-9b collection is being organized into an online database of plants that are now growing in the collection or have been tried in the past. Mike's extensive collection of nature and botanic photographs and his personal experience in horticulture may help other gardeners living in the Houston/Galveston area who are looking for inspiration and help with their own garden.
